Yeah so my question could be rephrased as “why can’t my car be updated to handle android auto wirelessly if all the necessary gear is already there?”. Well, turns out some of the gear might be missing after all.

It does have wifi connectivity and even has its own SIM card. Apparently it’s a connection speed thing. Sucks, I hoped it’s a software problem with a solution :(

My car has its own SIM card, why does it need to connect to my phone anyway?

I know there are options but all I can find are from manufacturers I don’t know/trust. Which one are you using?
