Secretly manipulating what other adults are allowed to consume because you think they can’t handle it…hmmm…I wonder who else did that.

I get where you are coming from, where moderation of media can become thought control.

Unfortunately, the Paradox of Tolerance means we have to be intolerant of intolerance, of stochastic terrorism, of manipulation and disinformation, of yellow journalism, of hate.

In the case presented by comic, I see it as a white lie to help someone get outside of a toxic echo chamber that is Lox News, I mean Fox News Entertainment.

So you get where I’m coming from but somehow this philosophy makes it… Inevitable?

This is sounding more fascist by the minute

            More like acceptable.

No one is immune from propaganda. Not you, not me, and not the older generation that’s been proven to be very susceptible. The ideal is to have a discussion about it, but given the toxicity of the right wing and how very skilled they are, I get it. Hell, I told my sister to do this exact thing to my grandpa. Because I cared about him and that shit, on top of being evil, probably isn’t good for blood pressure and stress.

We make decisions for each other all the time and the news can be obtained elsewhere. Far from fascism.

All I’ve gathered from this discussion is it really is fitting that the comic is a play on the word hypocrisy.

Either way, thanks for the discussion.

Legit question. What would you do? A loved one is in a right wing pipeline. They are resistant to discussion regarding the topic (as is common with such things). There are known negative health, life, and moral outcomes to letting it continue. It is known that removing the easy access has positive results. You have the ability to limit them in some way that would not harm or truly limit them (as previously stated, news is obtainable from many sources).

The trolley approaches and your hand is on the lever. What’s your solution? Because this isn’t a thought problem. It’s something that real people are dealing with every day.

Legit response. I would leave their agency alone and discuss their ideas in the open.

I wouldn’t like the idea of someone taking my autonomy away, and I don’t think you would either.

I also don’t ascribe to the notion that the ends justify the means.

Ok. They tell you to fuck off, as was included in the problem statement. They latch to their propaganda based beliefs because that’s how it works when there is constant reinforcement, as was implied by the problem statement. They continue to be at risk for a lot of terrible things, often including being abandoned by family when they’ve gone too far down the rabbit hole, which is a real thing that happens. Now what?

You seem to believe liking things equates to willingness to do them. Intervention is a common thing when people put themselves in harms way. Be it a child reaching for a stove, an alcoholic hitting rock bottom, or a dementia patient being placed in a care home. We fuck with each other’s agency all the time when the alternative is worse. And pretty much every instance involves a lot of heartache and doubt (other than the stove thing).

I also don’t ascribe to the notion that the ends justify the means.

Really? Cause I’m really not a fan of stabbing people as a rule, but when it’s done to remove a tumor it’s alright. Ends don’t inherently justify the means. Murdering a bunch of people? Pretty hard to justify and is the basis of a lot of villain arcs when it’s tried. Removing a redundant TV channel? Lot easier to feel fine about in context.
