Unlike a tomato, I found it challenging to tell. I was thinking of growing carrots this year but figured I’d have the same issue. I might give it a go next summer though.

I also over estimated how big a bean plant is. Images online were misleading. I only planted 3.
They aren’t very big. Not big enough to need any trestles or anything. But have a decent amount of beans for their size. But barely enough for one person’s meal.
It’s possible they aren’t in the optimal location. Not sure. They get a lot of direct sun. And I water them every few days since it’s not been raining much here. (Illinois).
My tomato plants have gotten quite out of control. I have 4 and they grew so big I had to prune a lot the other day and I’m running out of room where they are.
Next year I’ll plant more beans. And only 2 tomato plants.
Hmmm… Yeah. So I plant a shitload of them every season , and I get a shitload of beans because of that. I water my garden daily for 15 minutes at 6am (on a timer, automatic), rain or shine. But my beans are in raised beds with really super good drainage.
Sounds like you maybe just didn’t plant enough bean plants. Live and learn, my friend. But make sure to savor each bean you get this season. Maybe save em up (blanch and freeze for a couple of cuttings) until you have enough for a meal…?
