I’m 90% I’m about to be laid off from my job tomorrow and this is my first time being laid off and this was my first dev job. I’ve worked here for over 7 years which is a long time at a dev job I know.

I’m just wondering what I should do in the meeting, what should I ask for? I’m having a range of emotions from fear of losing my house and health insurance (thanks usa) to relief and hope that I’m going to find something better and more fulfilling.

Thanks for reading

Edit: it’s confirmed I am getting laid off. Thanks everyone for the advice and well wishes. It really helped and means a lot.

You won’t immediately lose your house and health insurance. There’s a program called COBRA that you’ll gain access to that will allow you to continue to have health insurance, and you’ll get access to unemployment insurance, which will pay you a substantial percentage of your previous income on the condition that you’re actively applying to (I think 5?) jobs every week. Try to say as little as possible, and don’t sign or agree to anything on the spot, and consult with an employment attorney if you feel something is off about the layoff. I’m sorry this is happening to you, but I believe you’ll be able to recover from this.

COBRA cost me over 2k a month to keep my family covered. No fun. Had to do a hospital visit during that window though, so I probably came out ahead.
