    Most of what I’ve read has focused on increased voluntary isolation related to the internet, social media, and binge streaming. People consume way more media per week on average than they did just 15 years ago, and that’s largely replacing going out and meeting people

      I mean it doesn’t help that our society has systematically destroyed third spaces where people could exist freely and socialize with others. Those that do still exist are becoming prohibitively expensive on top of it.

      Structurally, we have built a damningly isolated society. So it’s no wonder people are supplementing that lack of social enrichment with media consumption.

      It isn’t really a voluntary isolation when you exist in a society that is structured to isolate you from your community.
