I’m a Lemmy user who’s exploring different Piefed servers. Is there anything I should know? Do servers get dropped often?
Lemmy. Piefed has problems with how they moderate and censor content at a system level, whereas on Lemmy that’s handled by admins and moderators, so picking an instance that aligns with you solves most issues.
Lemmy. Piefed has some cool features like scheduling posts, but the lead dev is very unhinged. There are weird rules and prohibitions, and I’ve heard of a ban on transgender users (but that might have been reversed since). But for now the codebases are similar enough that we can talk to each other.
piefed blocks more stuff and makes it easier to block stuff. it generally has poorer federation.
lemmy is better if you want more content, piefed if you want more control.
personally i think piefed has a better onboarding experience; plus the ability to see related posts in a thread makes discoverability much better too.
Piefed has the option to use built in block lists for users and domains, along with a bunch of other stuff.
It all sounds great, but it’s someone else making those choices for you.
Like, if someone said:
Evil people shouldn’t be left alone with children
Like 99.99% of people will agree, everyone is onboard.
The issue is when a bunch of people then realize they disagree on who is “evil”. Some people will only disagree on minute details, others will be complete opposites.
So a logical person, would likely prefer an instance without built-in filtering, because it’s really not hard to do yourself.
That being said, some pifed instances don’t use those features.
Like, I could make a list titled “Nazis to block” and fill it with 90% actual Nazis, and then the other 10% is people who taste soap when they eat cilantro…
The vast majority of people would want that blocklist. And they’d just “join” it or however it works, and my silent crusade against non-cilantro enjoyers progresses because now their outreach is blocked.
It’s just a poor trade off compared to blocking the obvious problem accounts on sticking to well moderated communities. Especially since they that method, users won’t see their comments even on other instances
Seems to me piefed is a very politically opinionated social platform, so, it would be an echo chamber.
It’s an echo chamber by design by the dev of it.
The fedidb has a list of uptime for servers, so you could pick one thats been around awhile
But, mbin! is no longer in dev, so a bad future bet?

Mbin is a fork of kbin that continues to be developed. It’s not being developed as quickly as when the original dev was developing kbin, but it’s definitely enough to keep things running, and I honestly don’t have much I can complain about - it’s been pretty smooth running for me.
Mbin is very much still in active development. Where did you hear it wasn’t?
Are you confusing Mbin with /kbin maybe?
piefed hates differing political opinions
political opinions that differ from what?
The guy who made it. He thinks he’s a “disinformation expert”, and by default he blocks all sources that any normal person would call centrist or right leaning, as well as far, far left. The only allowed sources are the ones that are pro democrat and their ideologies.
I’m a communist but I hate authoritarianism. Would they be alright with me?

There’s also Mbin which doesn’t really have this political baggage that both Lemmy and Piefed seem to have.
So they’re not really limited to just Lemmy.
