I don’t approve that, but that’s kind of an open secret about prison culture. Well, maybe not skinning alive specifically, but murder and torture - yes.
Even if he doesn’t want to be there, is it possible general population would be a high risk for him, and that wardens are taking extra care given his high profile?
At least part of the reason he is being kept separate is because he’s not actually in prison, technically he’s been held pending extradition so it’s more like jail, that just happens to be in a prison.
