I don’t think they think their pray is friends.
I am not sure why they make that sound but they definitely will kill the birds on the first chance they get.

My cat ekekeks at birds yet she gets confused and panics if a bird is actually within reach. But she also won’t kill mice and just plays with them sooo
I believe they make that sound out of both excitement and frustration. And yes, they very much want to catch and kill.
I love cats, but they’ve been pretty terrible for the environment at times. They’re too efficient as little murder machines.
