I’m gonna be that guy and point out that Vader means father in dutch. His name was always a spoiler. I’m trying to think of how you would inMaul someone but all I can think is ‘I’m gonna inmaul you mom later’

Lucas has gone back and forth on this one in interviews, but the honest truth seems to be that he wanted dark/death + “invader.” Somewhere there’s a video of him admitting he had no idea about the translation of the name until well after it was chosen (sorry, I looked and couldn’t locate the clip in a timely manner).
Yeah I’m not surprised. I’m always, like, in a state of suspension of disbelief when it comes to hearing about Lucas insane conceptualizations, like hearing he suggested names like ‘Darth insaneous’ or ‘Darth icky’ at points. When I heard the Vader/Father explaination I was like “this is both on the nose enough and also too cleaver to be true”
Maybe he released the interview as a special edition
The Vader=Anakin thing was a retcon introduced when writing Empire. Early drafts of ESB explicitly have the two as different characters. Vader being the Dutch word for father is just a remarkable coincidence.
See my other response to the other reply for more but yeah, I can see that. The general mythology behind how Star Wars was made is a series of ‘too good to be true’ coincidences and interruptions.
