Baffling how much of the gamer community lines up to suck Gabe Newell’s billionaire cock when GOG is out there doing it way better
Without this billionaire we wouldn’t have had Linux gaming
Given this, his recent stance on Trump is bigoted and steam’s contract with Palantir was coming out of nowhere.
I try to buy off GOG whenever I can. Great platform.
My favorite part is the installers.
I just installed a 2004 sierra game (Arcanum - very hard solo, def made for co-op) and the installer threw me back to the early noughties, and it was just lovely. That green progress bar and the wildly outdated game ads were hugely pleasing.
I love old keygen software and fucking 2000/xp era aesthetic so much
I don’t like how it insists on admin privileges
I need a second HDD for storage of the GOG installers I have and it’s killing me that I can only run a handful of games at a time. Stupid small SSD. Currently have two installed, NMS and Zero Dawn and I’d love to finish the Witness at some point in this century. Ugh.
Are they compressible? You might have luck gzip or bzip2 compressing the .exe files.
Am not certain. I’m just holding fast with the two games I have - No Man’s Sky just did another massive update and has a ton of new shit to do so I’m faffing around with the new space base building parts (too cool for words!) and enjoying the hell out of it for now.
Factual and heterosexual
real. facts. no notes. i fucking love gog. and as linux support is finally growing, it will only get better and better.
they’ve been saying for over a decade they’re gonna build a linux GOG Galaxy client. I’ll believe it if it happens.
they should just chip in some $ to help Heroic
Reportedly they hired a new senior programmer with “extensive linux experience” (or something like that), and ever since it broke free from under CDPR they’ve said that linux is the next horizon.
Words are still words, sure. But it at least looks like they’re trying.
hope they dont vibe code the client, or smth idk, idk if they are gonna do it.
Why not just use Heroic? Has GOG support
Personally, my favorite thing about GOG is that I don’t need a client at all. I can access my whole GOG “library” without a storefront launcher app installed on my computer. Since I keep the installer files backed up, I don’t even need to sign into an account. If I wanted a storefront/launcher app in between me and the games, Steam is a better one. GOG is for launcherless DRM-free games.
This comes up every time GoG is mentioned. I feel the need to say that I am sorry that this is important to you and not getting attention, NAD also that it doesn’t matter to me at all.
Now if only they stepped up on Linux compatibility, I’d actually be using their launcher like I used to on Windows.
What is this nonsense about Linux compaitibility? They have tons of Linux compatible games. On any game you own they let you download a Linux version if it exists.
They don’t have a Linux version of their launcher, and don’t have a system to automatically configure Wine/Proton for games without native Linux support, which is most of their library. There’s nothing in the licence of Wine or Proton that would stop them just reusing Valve’s work, which is why third party launchers like Heroic can do it.
Fair enough, I’ve never really thought of GoG as a launcher, to me it was always more of a storefront.
I actually play most GoG games on Steamdeck through Heroic Launcher and only ever had minor issues with the games not registering SD controls.
Oh, I’m using Heroic for that too, it works well enough. But I was using GoG launcher before switching to Linux, even for Steam games and other storefronts. I would like to keep using it on Linux, hence my previous comment.
I appreciate the enormous work Valve has done for Linux gaming, but I’m also somewhat concerned about Steam being the only storefront that also combines with a Proton-compatible launcher. GoG could be a real competition if they added that option.
If they have the launcher on all major platforms, it will be an excuse to cut the standalone installers. Be careful what you wish for.
“Steak too juicy” type downside. If they were looking for an excuse, they could just stop supporting the standalone installers.
And at that moment If stop supporting Gog. I have used them pretty exclusively exactly so I can own my isntallers
GOG is the GOAT, it’s the only game marketplace that I know that allows you to OWN your games. But sadly a lot of games aren’t there and I have to go to steam as backup
🤓 Um, akshually you still don’t OWN the games, it’s still just a license (has been since at least the SNES era if not earlier). The difference is that since you can digitally maintain your own complete DRM free copies of the install media, it’s the physical equivalent of “having the game cartridge” (for old systems without online patches). In other words, if the company says the license is no longer valid then they can’t prevent you from installing/copying/backing-up anyway.
It’s just important to note that depending on your local laws, it’s still not true ownership, but more like “possession”.
GOG first, but If i buy it on steam and I lose access to it, I will find a working copy.
The word “own” in this context refers to the fact that you can keep a private copy of the game for yourself. What you are arguing is that the consumer does not own the copyrighted assets used.
It’s like saying that even though I bought a Toyota Camry, I don’t actually own it because I’m not allowed to make a copy of it and sell it. You could use that logic to say no one really owns anything. Maybe youd have a point, but not really in the context if what anyone else here is saying.
the autistics are fiiiightiiiiingggggg
You can sell your Camry…
I can resell the Camry I bought, but I cannot copy the complete design of Toyota’s Camry, build it and sell it as such.
Legally, you own a copy of a book if you buy the book even if you don’t also buy the copyright for the book, so wouldn’t be allowed to make copies (beyond the single backup copy your allowed to make in case the first is damaged that you’re required to destroy if you ever stop owning the one you bought). This also applied to physical copies of video games, at least when they were new. In the US, this is part of what’s known as the First Sale Doctrine, but other territories typically have stone equivalent even if it doesn’t have a name.
About a century ago, book publishers tried putting a licence in copies of books and claiming that if you bought them, you were only buying the licence, but stopped after courts decided that you’d still bought a copy of the book and a copy of the text of the licence, but hadn’t become party to the licence. When game (and other software) publishers tried it later, they were basically just allowed to, even though there’s not really anything that makes the First Sale Doctrine any less applicable to games than books.
I see your point, a few years ago while playing Halo on the xbox a guy said he pwned me. I later learned that pwned stood for owned. Since then I’d been worried that I got cloned (copied). Thank you for clarifying.
You literally download the install files onto your pc.
Even if gog went down forever, you get to keep those files unless you delete them.
Well that sucks if so, but still, if it doesn’t stand in the way of using the games offline I’m happy so long as the software police doesn’t knock on my door
I heard it doesn’t localize prices as great and that’s the only actual criticism I can physically think of.
(if true)They do, but their regions are not aligned with Steam, so for a lot of people in many countries, it’s 3-4 times more expensive than on steam.
It does not matter for AAA titles, as those scumbags charge the same price across all regions in steam anyway.
But for many mid tier and indie games, it’s a tough ask to get someone to pay 10% of their monthly income for a game they can get for 3% of their income on steam.
It’s the only thing stopping me from buying on GOG
I would have guessed the regions to be universal standards. Are they not?
Apparently it’s got more to do with Publishers not giving GOG the attention it deserves. They don’t opt in on setting up regional pricing.
Gog could do more I think, like defaulting it to on, and encouraging publishers.
They could adopt something like a purchasing power parity rates table.
But I also think that Publishers don’t want to see GOG succeed.
physically think of I loved this misuse of intensifiers. Not shade-throwing, was just a legit lol for me :D
What do you mean? That they charge the same for a game in poor countries as in rich ones?
they only support fewer currencies displayed?? i think is what they mean
agreed
Where GoG-deck?
I have that, but on the steamdeck
Have your ever tried GoG… on STEAM…?
Me want GoG-deck!
I pretty much only buy my games from GOG, or Itch. I think I’ve bought ~1 game per year from Steam. Proton has been great for linux gaming, and I love my SteamDeck, but GOG lets me keep my games, and doesn’t give me shit for wanting to “play 2 games at once” like Steam does.
I see no wrong opinion there
Also make a little wrapper script around steamcmd and you can have your modlists offline however you like. No update breaking it, just playing.
Played Well dweller demo at Nintendo Switch, bought on GOG.
Just dont play games
