The big problem you’ll run into is that it’s very likely outgoing connections to port 25 is blocked. In my experience it’s very uncommon that residential ISPs allow it, and even most VPS providers will block it unless you request access. So you’ll most likely need some form of relay anyway, and at that point you may as well send directly to the relay.
Would 2 keyboards fail in the exact same way, with all caps and shift held down, but one is persistent after reboots and one isn’t? It doesn’t make sense.
Is this a typical pattern for keyboard controller failure that could be seen in this same way on two laptops at the same time?
I mean, I think it’s much more likely that some hardware failed, than that someone executed a highly sophisticated attack that worked but ended up showing obvious signs of tampering.
So the chain of exploits would have to be arbitrary code execution in VLC from playing a malicious FLAC file, chained into a privilege escalation to be able to mess with hardware and finally an attack against the firmware. This chain of exploits seem extremely unlikely. Bundled in some random torrent no less.

Yet my feeds are full of memes about barely surviving. I’m guessing that this is mostly due to feeds ending up very US centric, and the situation there is probably a lot worse than Sweden.
Honestly, I think there is a quite large set of people who actually like the content. The guy has a point, if it’s highly upvoted on Reddit there was a lot of people who enjoyed the post.
There is also a very loud portion of people who absolutely hates it, (and I can agree that it’s a bit weird to repost content that relates to someone’s personal experience), but I think it’s actually a vocal minority. Perhaps a minority that is overrepresented in the Fediverse meta communities.
Of course it would be awesome and the best if most of the content on the Fediverse was original, but I would be concerned that it’s actually would become too much of a ghost town if the small number of accounts that post a shit ton of content would leave.
To be honest I haven’t done that deep search into how common it is for VPS providers to block port 25, but in the cases it has been relevant for me it has required at least raising a request and for instance for Hetzner being a customer for at least one month. I’ve figured that it’s a good thing and if a VPS provider has no restrictions at all their IP ranges are much more likely to have bad reputation and blocklist issues.
