I’d say the big difference between north american and european roads is just the fact that in europe 3 lanes per direction is generally the maximum, ignoring junctions.
Meanwhile in the US and even canada you get significant stretches (generally in urban areas too, wonderful) where you have 4+ lanes per direction!!!
We also tend to have vastly smaller junctions in general, both on highways and on smaller roads. The absurd size and higher frequency of interchanges on american highways can make the amount of roads almost quadruple in some areas, just an endless sea of flyovers…
