Quadruple moderation is killing Lemmy. It’s a gift to Reddit
There’s a rule about online communities I want people here to understand: the 90-9-1 rule.
Roughly 90% lurk, 9% comment, and 1% create.
Additionally - lemmy monthly active users is stangant at about 35k monthly active and not improving:
https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/stats
When I first got to Lemmy, I had trouble finding enough content I was interested in even commenting on. So I figured: why complain about the lack of content when one can start posting it myself?
That’s why I post so much.
If people don’t post, most Lemmy communities simply don’t have enough creators to sustain themselves. You need posts before lurkers can lurk, commenters can comment, and some of those people eventually become creators themselves.
I’m not posting just to flood Lemmy. I’m trying to help solve one of Lemmy’s biggest problems: not enough content creators.
And frankly, doing that has been a nightmare.
Lemmy has a quadruple-moderation problem
Every active content creator has to survive four layers:
- Community moderators can remove your posts or ban you from the community.
- Your home-instance admins can ban your entire account.
- Receiving-instance admins can block/ban you for everyone on their instance, even though you don’t belong to it.
- Public moderation history means those decisions follow you. One moderator’s decision can influence another and snowball into more moderation.
For prolific content creators, that’s brutal.
I’ve had multiple accounts banned over one or two posts that somebody didn’t like. Months of posting, comments, engagement and contributions can effectively disappear from a community because of a couple of moderation decisions.
And the more you contribute, the worse the odds become. If you make hundreds or thousands of posts, eventually you’re going to post something that one moderator somewhere doesn’t like.
You don’t need one moderation team to tolerate you. You need multiple independent moderators and admins, across multiple servers, to remain aligned indefinitely.
There’s almost no cost to deleting a creator
This is another major difference from Reddit.
There is generally no financial investment in a Lemmy community’s content. A volunteer moderator can ban someone who contributed months of posts and comments and lose all of that person’s past and future contributions without losing revenue, salary or investment. Did you know all creator posts are wiped out from lemmy after account banned?
The creator paid the cost in time.
The community loses the content.
The users lose something to read and discuss.
And the moderator who pushed the button may personally lose essentially nothing.
So who benefits from making prolific content creation this difficult?
Because it certainly isn’t Lemmy.
And this creates an enormous attack surface
I genuinely have trouble believing that everyone complaining about prolific posters simply doesn’t understand this dynamic. At some point I have to question whether some of it is deliberate.
If I were Reddit and wanted to undermine a federated competitor, this is exactly where I’d attack it: its content creators.
You don’t need to hack Lemmy. You don’t need to DDoS instances. You don’t need to take anything offline.
Lemmy already provides the mechanism.
Report prolific contributors. Call their posting “spam.” accuse them of being bots. Point moderators toward their public moderation histories. Get one account banned somewhere, then let that decision influence moderators elsewhere.
Eventually the creator gets tired of fighting and leaves.
I’m not claiming I have proof Reddit is doing this. I’m saying Lemmy’s architecture makes this kind of subversion ridiculously easy, and Reddit would be an obvious beneficiary.
Reddit doesn’t have this same federated quadruple-jeopardy problem. You’re primarily dealing with the moderation of the subreddit you’re contributing to.
Lemmy desperately needs more people creating content, yet its moderation structure makes life progressively harder for the people who create the most of it.
At some point we should be asking:
Who actually benefits from that?
A plea to admins: protect your creators ban reddit agents instead
Before banning someone, look at who is contributing and who is reporting.
If an account with zero posts in years reports someone who has contributed hundreds of posts, don’t treat those two users as equally valuable to the health of the community.
That doesn’t put creators above the rules. Remove bad posts. Warn people. Moderate proportionally.
But stop throwing away months of content and future contributions over one or two posts someone disliked.
Creating content takes time. Reporting takes seconds.
Protect the people actually building your communities.
edit: I am reposting from reddit - there is no rules against that. its actually great thing for majority of lemmy users!
This reposting tool is open source - i’ve never been hiding the fact im reposting from reddit.
people get only high quality pre-dozed, pre-moderated content.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/lemmy-deep-lighthouse/
I think more people should be using similar tools and populate lemmy with content. - htis is the only way to move that 35k mau number and creat conditions for more OC on lemmy
edit 2 " but we dont want content" argument.
The fuck you dont. who the fuck is we?
And this is why I don’t buy the argument that the people still here represent what users want.
Look at the numbers.
- Fediverse: ~14 million registered, ~1.17 million MAU.
- Lemmy: ~756,000 registered, ~35,000 MAU.
Lemmy has had three quarters of a million accounts created and only about 4.6% of that number is active monthly.
Obviously that doesn’t mean 95% were all regular users who quit. But it does tell us something important: the people currently active are a tiny, self-selected fraction of everyone who has tried this platform.
So when 30 existing users say “WE don’t want more content,” you’re hearing from the people the current system successfully retained. You’re not hearing from the enormous number of people who tried Lemmy and aren’t here anymore.
Maybe instead of assuming the remaining users have figured out what Lemmy should be, we should be asking why so many people tried it and didn’t stick around.
Hi it’s me, the person you’re talking about.
Let’s get one thing out of the way first: you’ve admitted that your posts are automated, as if it wasn’t obvious. You’re a bot. You’re not tagged as one, but sanitation@lemmy.today is a bot that a human sometimes uses.
Now as for the content you bot, I don’t have an issue with a lot of it. Go ahead and post your links and memes. Meme culture is built on theft, anyway. I don’t dislike you any more than any other mass poster who is rarely present in the comments of their posts
It’s the content you steal from OC communities that drives me crazy. You justify it as “encouraging content” but that sure hasn’t planned out - you’re the dominant poster in every com you repost to.
You take every joke from shittymoviedetails and, by not linking the source, basically claim it as your own. But don’t think the solution is to include a link. Just don’t repost it at all.
You copy and paste other people’s complaints to a community for venting about minor gripes. And since they’re not YOUR complaints, you aren’t getting the catharsis of the original poster. You’re literally just spreading negativity. This one especially pisses me off because THAT COMMUNITY WAS DOING FINE before you flooded it.
If you’re gonna be a spambot, at least show us the respect of fixing your shitty repost machine to deal with long titles.
TL;DR: You’re an untagged bot making the Internet a worse place by reposting the dumbest shit from reddit
not a bot. another thing that pushes active creators away from lemmy - relitigating everything over and over and over again.
its genuinely exoustingHow about reposting everything over and over?
Why are you so insistent on multiplying and spreading what already exists?
Why is MORE content better for you than GOOD content?
I would rather Lemmy be 100% OC with a handful of posts per day than for it to be yet another bucket where you can dump ancient memes. We’ve got enough sites like that.
Also, definitely a bot. Your clipboard isn’t truncating post titles when you manually copy and paste shit from reddit.
Also also, you’re not a creator. Why would an actual creator be incentivized to use a site where 99% of it is shit stolen from reddit? Wouldn’t they prefer a site with fellow creators?
I’m ok with you getting pushed out.
How about reposting everything over and over?
im not. I check for links and attempt to not repost existing links. I have 4400 posts and only small minority are accidental reposts. Thats why im urging moderators to pay attention - if one posts 20 posts and 10 of them are reposts - thats a problem.
if someone posts 4k posts and 3 of them are reposts - thats just statistics. Major difference in intent.
I’m talking about social media and the Internet as a whole.
Nothing you’ve posted is original. It’s all reddit posts that you’ve…get ready for it…reposted.
yeah call me lemmy poster. its semantics who cares . only reddit agents taht want to waste time
I don’t think it’s semantics when you’re lumping in “reposting” with “content creators”. Your post seems to imply lemmy’s moderation stifles content creators, when the posts that moderation actions are being applied to are mass reposts of reddit content, not actual organic content created by lemmy users.
You didn’t hear the good news:
Now as for the content you bot, I don’t have an issue with a lot of it. Go ahead and post your links and memes. Meme culture is built on theft, anyway. I don’t dislike you any more than any other mass poster who is rarely present in the comments of their posts
Just count your losses and move on.
I’ve had posts of mine removed. It happens. Logic dictates that it happens more the more you post.
And yes, your account is objectively bot operated (edit: at least partially). You admitted as much.
I’ve had posts of mine removed. It happens. Logic dictates that it happens more the more you post.
ive had thousands removed. this is a problem.
And yes, your account is objectively bot operated. You admitted as much. not a bot. real human here. reddit agents ofc would love to keep accusing person of being a bot
I agree with your diagnosis, but I disagree with your treatment. You are doing the same mistake I did when I implemented content mirroring on alien.top: you are putting out so much automated “content” that outsiders will look at this and think the community is just a place for you to dump links.
Also, please drop the main character syndrome and the “Reddit agent” paranoia. You have multiple people here telling you that your approach is harmful to the groups that are already here. It’s not a conspiracy. Reddit doesn’t care about you.
lemmy userbase is stuck ar 35k a month. thats it.
people that propose - “lets do more of the same” and expecting different results are delusional.and since its so small - there is no content, and since lemmy bans creators that are trying to change this - it will never change.
so if this continues - there is a reason for active creators to also think - wth am I wasting my time for?
You are not an active creator. You are just trying to hack your way into community building. You are frustrated because most people are completely apathetic when it comes to actual action against Big Tech, and you think that by bringing a flamethrower to the beach you will be able to boil the oceans. Trust me, I have done the same mistake.
Yeah I really don’t like people mass-posting news articles calling themselves creators.
Or worse, shit memes. Keep them to the shitpost/meme/196 communities.
Also, please drop the main character syndrome and the “Reddit agent” paranoia.
not just me. many people tried lemmy and back on reddit at this point. just too little content, too much moderation
Can I point out - lemmy MAU is stangant 35k a month, this is a problem.
if its still stagnant by now - it will never improve organically going forward:https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/stats
what is your solution for attracting users?
all im hearing is some whishy washy - “they will come” organically - but they are not coming organically. why is that? there is no content thats why.
what is your solution for attracting users?
“attracting new users” is not a sentiment that is shared by all of us, not at any cost anyhow.
The cost being the fediverse becoming a sad impersonal place (like reddit) before it even lifts off.
Your “solution” might attract a few people - those who think bigger numbers are better, always.many people want to switch from reddit, but cant - no content.
also noeone everyone shares your definition of lemmy. to me - I would love it to be decentralized reddit. im fine with reddit content as long as I dont have to use reddit.many people want to switch from reddit, but cant - no content
That’s a bullshit statement. It doesn’t even make sense. Once again, you’re thinking people only want to participate in platforms that already have a fuckton of users. (edit: or content, sheesh)
also noeone everyone shares your definition of lemmy
That’s what I said. And again, it’s not just Lemmy. Do you even understand how the fediverse works?
OP has a point though. We do need more people, more original content…
Issue is… (and I’m explaining this to OP:) It can’t be low quality content. Reposts also kinda make it look like a dead place with mostly bot activity… You’re not the first person to come up with the idea to spam this place and it’ll attract users. We already tried this strategy and it does not attract new users. You can look up a bit of history of this place and you’ll see you have to come up with a better idea and not continue to make the same mistake other people already made.
That’s a fair concern. I agree that a wall of obvious bot spam can make a community look more dead.
The problem is the 99% problem: roughly 99% of users aren’t creating posts at all, much less original content specifically for Lemmy.
Even Reddit runs heavily on people finding interesting stuff elsewhere and sharing it. That’s what I’m automating - curation, not a blind feed. Popularity thresholds, age limits, community rules and content filtering are all applied.
Original content is obviously better. But you need an active community before you can realistically expect enough people to create it.
Yeah, though that’s not original in any way. It’s a curated dumpster of Reddit posts. And people don’t like it. As I said we’ve already tried it before. We shouldn’t keep making the same mistake over and over again. We need less re-posts, less rehashing of content from better platforms… Why would anyone join a platform with mostly re-used material? They’re gonna stick with the original! And that’s where we’re at.
lemmy MAU is stangant 35k a month
Social media usage is declining everywhere.
this is a problem.
It’s not a problem if you consider that “Lemmy” is just one of the many ways that people can interact with the open social web. The Fediverse as whole has 50x more users. RSS feeds are (slowly) making a comeback. People who are really deep into their interests (photography, DIY audio, hardware) still have and prefer their specialized forums over hanging out with Reddit bots and agency interns that are doing “social media PR” on certain subs.
Seriously, it seems that you grew up in a time when Social Media was fun and exciting and you’re too attached to those memories. These times are gone. Let go of the nostalgia, focus your energy on building something new and of your own instead of running around trying to convince the rest of the world that we need to go back to some imaginary utopia that never really existed.
I think this is exactly the disconnect: not everyone shares your vision of what the internet should become.
Saying “RSS is making a comeback” as an answer to stagnant social network growth is honestly kind of absurd. RSS is useful, but the average person isn’t abandoning Reddit, Facebook, or TikTok to curate RSS feeds and hang out on specialized forums.
And “the Fediverse has 50x more users” doesn’t solve Lemmy’s problem. Someone wanting a Reddit-style discussion platform isn’t interchangeable with someone posting on Mastodon or using another ActivityPub service.
I’m not asking to recreate some imaginary Reddit utopia. I want the good parts of Reddit: active communities, constant content, and discussion, without the centralized corporate platform, censorship, and control. A federated Reddit alternative is valuable precisely because it can provide that experience differently without corporate overlords banning whatever they want.
You may personally want something completely different from social media. That’s fine. But that’s your vision, not necessarily what everyone who might use Lemmy wants.
If Lemmy is stagnant and huge numbers of communities are nearly empty, telling potential users to “let go” and accept that they shouldn’t want a Reddit-like experience clearly isn’t working.
average person isn’t abandoning Reddit, Facebook, or TikTok to curate RSS feeds and hang out on specialized forums.
The average person is not going to Reddit as well, unless they are searching for something online and end up in a linked discussion.
Someone wanting a Reddit-style discussion platform
YOU want a Reddit-style platform, but you don’t want to use Reddit, so you are trying to create your own version of it, with blackjack and hookers. You are part of an tiny minority that is too focused on the medium instead of the message.
You are in the minority. People just want to connect with each other. The medium rarely matters for them.
A federated Reddit alternative is valuable because it can provide that experience differently without corporate overlords banning whatever they want.
And now you are seeing that if you remove the “corporate overlords”, the power will be exerted by a multitude of dysfunctional, disorganized tribes. Consider this an opportunity to understand the myth of the Noble Savage.
Please don’t engage with the AI commentors.
Also, please drop the main character syndrome and the “Reddit agent” paranoia.
I post to communities that Im interested in. thats why I came here from reddit.
PCMR and gaming had no contribution at all when I started posting. Im building up those communities, ya welcomein fact I intentionally dont want to post to games community as it had more contributors, I intentionally picked community with less active contributions. and im sorry - many mods actually reached out and thanked me for contributing.
A few months ago I read a comment which stuck with me, which is that if you try to break that 9:1 ratio by artificially increasing the amount of posts, by simply copying them from elsewhere, you don’t end up with a better community. You end up with an empty community.
The reason the “link to article with comments below” format has worked so well for a huge variety of sites (including reddit, lemmy, digg, slashdot, hackernews at much more) is that people like discussing things. The point of linking content isn’t just to link it, but also to discuss it. Without that, a lot of the point is gone. When I see a community where all the latest posts have zero comments under them it doesn’t fill me with joy that the fediverse is getting more active - it fills me with despair that no-one’s engaging with it.
Lemmy has quite a lot of posts already. If you want to help Lemmy, don’t post more - post a comment. Something you yourself actually think.
If sanitation would tick this box in their settings then all their problems would go away:

But they won’t, because that would let people filter them out.
I’m not a bot. Again with this humanity relitigation, on and on and on.
Seems you post a lot of duplicates. No wonder your posts get deleted if you keep spamming exactly the same post multiple times??? And then you violate community rules… After that you seem to be doing ban-evasion… I mean… Seems to me like Lemmy is working exactly as intended?! This isn’t a place to dump random spam posts? You gotta learn what this place is about.
You can’t just throw some dogfood at people and demand they like it. You’re not the center of the universe. Maybe start your own community if that’s your thing. You’d be able to make up your own rules there. There’s a button in the top menu bar.
When I started using federated social media I had to block a lot of people* who just mindlessly churned out posts with links to often dubious news articles etc. It became much better after that.
And often they see themselves as knights in shining armor that “help the fediverse lift off”.
It’s just another version of the terminally online forum regular.
* judging by the usernames, often the same person using accounts on different instances
Lemmy just isn’t what you think it is. The monthly user count doesn’t matter. If people wanted reddit content they would just go to Reddit. Lemmy is a replacement for the small scale human authored forums of the 2000s. Reddit killed them with embrace, extend, extinguish. Lemmy isn’t a replacement for Reddit, it is a replacement for the thing Reddit extinguished.
I don’t care about reddit posts and traditional social media. If I did I would just use that. I use reddit to moderate and participate in my small community with a few posts a week and I think it is going well.
Putting my thought on your original point at the top: “A plea to admins: protect your creators ban reddit agents instead”
All I can say is: Admins are already doing this to the best of their ability, for better or worse. Some admins moderate proportionally, some others don’t. It’s really a question of whether they appreciate your methods or not.
I also crosspost from Reddit, but specifically those that I would have posted/shared myself if I found it anywhere else.
A few other bots crosspost everything that goes in a subreddit in their own community. What do I see? Only the bots can post i.e. it’s a subreddit mirror. No one comments in it. In other words, it’s glorified spam that no one looks at. At best, it occupies space in lemmy instances. The reader is even required to go to Reddit to read the post itself. Knowing Lemmy, no one wants to bother doing that. Example: !pcmasterrace@zerobytes.monster. I see the new posts as a literal digital deluge that I can’t keep up with. I have better things to do.
I’m assuming here you want to populate Lemmy with a genuine desire to see it as a sustainable ecosystem. For general communities like the top communities you see in lemmy.world, the critical mass has already been reached. Force-increasing its monthly users will only do harm than good. Look up Eternal September to better understand where I’m coming from here.
What I suggest you can do is curate a small number of a subreddit’s best posts for the past 24 hours, copy its content, and crosspost them in an existing federated community. Consent from the community’s mods is important. Transparency (which includes posting as a bot account if this is automated) is also important. If your approach is unwanted by them, move on. That’s just how reality works. Also, respecting their decisions will do your reputation a favor and build trust in the long run.
- Public moderation history means those decisions follow you. One moderator’s decision can influence another and snowball into more moderation.
This has got to be the first time I’ve seen the modlog listed as a negative aspect of lemmy?
Let people post content and the votes decide whats interesting and what not i’d say. Spam imo would be the same post over again.
Good idea, but it doesn’t work. People just go “haha funni joke, upvote” regardless of relevance. This is how communities get suffocated.
Bruh, calling yourself a creator for reposting shit other people also found and reposted to a different site is the equivalent of calling yourself an artist while using genAI. 🙄
Given their profile avatar is AI-generated, well…
This post was written by AI
And now they’ve switched to posting comments generated by AI.
They are even using AI just to repost …
[…] have to be be recent (no more than 2 days), not have duplicates on lemmy, there are AI rules I typically add to enforce adherance with community rules etc. its only a high quailty highly rationed content.
im actually putting my money where my mouth is. credits are not cheap.
You can fight AI all you want, but that ship has sailed. AI is already embedded in search, moderation, coding, translation, recommendation systems, spam detection, and content workflows across the internet.
I’m using it here as a filtering and moderation tool - checking community rules, duplicates, age, relevance, and other criteria before something gets posted. That’s almost the opposite of blindly dumping content.
You can dislike AI on principle, but “AI was involved” isn’t an argument that the resulting post is bad. Judge the content and whether it follows the community’s rules.
I was starting to wonder because of your lengthy posts and use of emphasis, did you use AI to make this post?
Uploading AI slop and posting genuine content (reposted or “spammy” or not) are two very, very different things.
im running out of time. genuinely tried to make this work but I Think lemmy is just going to stay tiny reddit controlled app
Running out of time, or tokens?
time. thats another thing im arguing - having to relitigate all the same things time and time again is exhausting and time consuming.
I guess thats another reason people just quit posting.
I suspect most of it is reddit agents however
Dumping thousands of posts from billionaire-owned social media onto Piefed/Lemmy isn’t doing anything helpful.
If I wanted to see feeds full of that I’d be on Twitter, Reddit and the other garbage sources you pull your reposts from.
you get this content to attract users to lemmy, but then you can feed them all natural non-corporate controlled lemmy weird communist propaganda too. everybody wins (except corporations who loses a lot)
It’s garbage low effort ai powered reposts.
No one wins.
Having read the thread i do understand where you’re coming from. I’m sure some people like you’re posts but people are allowed to dislike them too.
It’s a tricky one. I have seen moderators and admins be heavy handed which can indeed damage the fediverse. But giving a repost account free reign to flood communtites isn’t ideal either.
If you are getting annoyed by admins and moderators i think it’s logical to run your own instance. You’ll never be able to stop people blocking/defederating but at least you’ll have more control.
I want to thank you for the effort you’re putting in. I believe you’re doing it for the right reasons but some people are not happy with the results. Perhaps you could reach out to the admins/mods who blocked you and come to an agreement about number of posts per week? Perhaps a dedicated reddit mirror instance would help more people to switch over?
Perhaps a dedicated reddit mirror instance would help more people to switch over?
It’s been tried, and guess what, it didn’t work. All the posts were dead. Any responses like “this is cool! how did you do it?” went unanswered because the real author never even knew the Lemmy post existed. No one wanted to engage with bot mirror posts. Several instances defederated because of the volume of posts and no engagement.
It may be dead for a commenter perspective but what about lurkers? I can understand some instances would defederate but would a reddit mirror help divert traffic from reddit to the fediverse?
Probably. But the Lemmy servers/admins/mods can’t handle the volume of traffic, either on a technical level (pure quantity of posts federating slowing down the server) or human level (something is misconfigured and now they have to clean it up).
Yeah that’s fair. If the reddit mirror was it’s own instance i think that would help to avoid those issues. Then admins can defederate if it’s breaking things.
If you do think a bot like this could divert traffic away from corpos then why not give it it’s own space? The fediverse is for everyone! Even bots lol
Well, I don’t think we should contribute to the dead Internet, but if someone wants to set up a standalone Lemmy instance that just lists Reddit posts, I can’t really stop them.
(Reddit is blocking the clients used to do this sort of thing, so it’s kind of a nonstarter anyway.)
edit: I am reposting from reddit - there is no rules against that. its actually great thing for majority of lemmy users!
As a member of the admin channels, this seems to be the most loathed part about your account. Reddit is a hatred echo chamber for the fediverse, second only to AI. While you view it as a positive element, nearly everyone else here left reddit and take offense to it’s posts following them. They view your participation to be bot-like behavior and that’s why you’re seeing so much pushback to your accounts in particular. I can promise you that a normal user that isn’t aggregating reddit content for the fediverse is not sharing your moderation and banning experience.
For a normal user, the gauntlet is much different. At least on the .zip domains, our policy is to not interfere with reports that don’t have a user or community that belongs to our instance unless it’s something requiring fast action like csam or doxxing, etc. We leave the rest to the mods and admins that the community belongs to.
Your account doesn’t offend me and I appreciate your participation but I will say that I’ve blocked you on my browsing account since I browse New/All and I don’t enjoy seeing what amounts to an overwhelming feed of reddit posts.
TL;DR: You’re using the fediverse in way that the majority of the platform feels it wasn’t designed for so you’re going to continue seeing the same retaliatory behaviors for as long as you continue to participate in that manner.
I appreciate the explanation, and honestly this “we dont want to be reddit” idea was brought up several times.
But I think there’s a fundamental disagreement here: not everyone shares your idea of what Lemmy should be. The existing 35k-ish MAU shouldn’t get to permanently define what Lemmy is allowed to become.
If the current philosophy were working, we’d see it in the results. Instead, Lemmy’s active user base has largely stagnated, and enormous numbers of communities are empty or get a couple of posts a week. Whatever we’re doing now isn’t producing meaningful growth.
And “we left Reddit” doesn’t necessarily mean “we never want to see anything that appeared on Reddit.” I left Reddit too. I wanted an alternative platform, not an alternative universe where interesting links, memes, news and discussions become contaminated because somebody also posted them on Reddit.
If my volume overwhelms New/All, that’s completely fair criticism. That’s something we can solve with posting limits, better filtering, community subscriptions, blocks, or better tooling.
But “the existing users don’t like this, therefore this isn’t what the Fediverse is for” becomes circular. The people who don’t like the existing culture may simply leave, so naturally the remaining population increasingly reflects that culture.
I’m trying a different approach because I want Lemmy to actually grow beyond its current niche. If most communities are empty and the active-user count isn’t meaningfully growing, I don’t think we should treat the status quo as proof that we’ve already figured out what users want.
But I think there’s a fundamental disagreement here: not everyone shares your idea of what Lemmy should be. The existing 35k-ish MAU shouldn’t get to permanently define what Lemmy is allowed to become.
I completely agree with you but until the community as a whole swings more toward wanting to feel like a Reddit part deux but without the algorithms, you’re going continue seeing this pushback and fighting an uphill battle. I wasn’t condoning the way your accounts are being treated. Lemmy and Piefed have a fairly robust blocking and filtering system. Your aggregation doesn’t affect my use of the platform at all because I’m able to hide it and I feel that’s enough protection, I don’t want to see your accounts reprimanded for behaving in a way that’s not breaking any rules that I can find.ike I said, I’m glad you’re here, regardless of whether I benefit from your posts or not. We need the variety to protect from these polarizing extremist mentalities towards behavior that doesn’t really effect us personally at all.
That being said, I am ok with stagnant growth metrics but I do understand that many users are not ok with that and desire for it’s popularity to explode. If it were ever to become as popular as reddit, I’m sure I would be looking for the next niche platform because I know in my heart that you can’t see that kind of popularity without the negative aspects that come along with it.
I’m able to hide it and I feel that’s enough protection.
“Why should I change it? He’s the one that sucks.”
New users shouldn’t have to start their experience by blocking a bunch of accounts.
And now you’re subjecting us to AI slop comments? Fuck all the way out of here with that shit. Use your own goddamn brain.
argue the points if you can.
When you make a point, I will. I’m not going to respond to slop.
Someone can create their own instance?
Also: not all moderators follow the same moderation style. When the Tesseract block list leaked, most Lemmings took it as a badge of honour. I was on it as well :3
yeah - but if every active postere then is forced to create their own lemmy instance because the are forced out - I think thats a problem.
Not every active poster, just serial bot posters and those who use AI to post. Which is good the less of you in the central fediverse the better.
Lemmy: ~756,000 registered, ~35,000 MAU.
ill leave you at this. no - lemmy is not better. its a skeleton of what it can be
its a skeleton of what it can be
You talk like a c suite wanna be. Must be in the frequent AI use.
I don’t know if the LLM you run everything by told you that’s a compelling argument or not, but it isn’t. Valuing numbers is what led to reddit being a shit hole. All of which have nothing to do with serial bot posting or using AI to post.
This, a hundred times this. Chasing big numbers like posts totals, upvotes, MAUs is what ruins communities. Slow the fuck down! Make communities for people, not bots and investors!
Ok but… You’re not creating. You’re flooding Lemmy with garbage from reddit. None of what you post is your creation. And it’s all low quality reddit crap. In !workreform@lemmy.world, for example, it was a fairly slow community, which is fine. Then you started flooding it with low-effort memes, drowning out the useful posts. This will kill a community. “Then post the content you want to see”, you’ll say. But there’s no point when for every one useful post there are thirty trash memes pushing it down.
Your actions are actively harmful to Lemmy.
I post into workreform - because I support that community and its message an find those memes very very relevant.
its not crap. all that stuff then reaching frontpage on lemmy is quite telling. those posts reach 1k upvotes as well. This is a proof those posts are well received.@frontg - you have 4 Posts in a year. you are the reason that people like me have to create more content the way I do it. if you would to contribute more I wouldnt have to.
Upvotes are not a measure of value. That thought process is how you get reddit and Facebook.
Again, you aren’t creating. You’re slopping reddit’s garbage over to Lemmy and suffocating its communities.
Edit: if you want to consider upvotes as a measure of value, look at the votes here. Everyone is disagreeing with you.
That thought process is how you get reddit and Facebook
but many people want that. Thats what I want - independent uncensorable reddit.
the fact that lemmy is not growing is confirming that current lemmy content approach is not working . proof is in the puddingYou WANT to turn lemmy into reddit? Fuck, now I’ve heard it all. Every comment you make just makes it worse. Everyone here is trying to get away from reddit. Christ.
