Its an old LG, but given the recent light on the lengths they’ll go to spy on us, I figured this guy was better off without any ability to even connect wirelessly. Don’t know if the Ethernet still works but I plan on keeping my TVs as dumb as possible, HDMI only.

If you’re wondering how to open lg TVs you just have to remove all the screws then start pulling open at the bottom and open the clips going up. With the TV face down on a soft surface just keep pulling on the back case from the bottom, it’ll take some effort to pop open. The top edge folds open more like a hidge than clips.

    OP, how did you isolate and identify the chip from the rest of it: did you have a service manual, or just relevant experience that told you where to look? Also, was it hardwired, or was it something you could just detach?

    I am definitely storing this away for future use, hence the questions. Right now I’ve got very old totally non-networked, non-exploitable sets, but I’m sure that will change some day. Hook a brother up so I know what to look for when I have to buy something new.

      I did the same thing and made a post about it with pictures. https://piefed.social/post/2362076

      I looked up pictures of wifi modules for my model beforehand and found a few replacement parts. So i had a general idea what to look for. Theres also a chance somebody opened the exact same tv modell and documented it on youtube.

      And yeah its a simple internal flatwire connector. If you ever want bt or wifi again you only need to reseat the cable again. Cant speak for every TV ofcourse.

          Sorry for a late reply. I do just know what I’m looking for, no service manual needed. I was actually looking for a coaxial cable for a antenna for the WiFi chip which I assumed was integrated on the processor board. But this display ran a separate rf module off a ribbon cable. It did take a minute to realize. But I knew that was WiFi at a minimum, turns out that also removed Bluetooth which was a plus. It has a IR remote so I gave the receiver in the TV a quick look and its just a button, led, and the IR receiver so that was all separate and good to go. If the WiFi was integrated I would have unplugged the antenna, but on this TV it took 1 screw to remove the whole rf module.

      Heads up, modern TV’s likely use an SoC (System on a Chip) which combine many if not all of the required parts for a “computer”, usually including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

      It will likely not be this easy with modern TV’s.

      Though clipping/shorting the antenna lines may still be an option. Or if it’s a PCB based antenna, cutting the traces.

        Yup. Same here. There’s not a printer in our house I haven’t fixed. But I do not reliably get good results with tearing out hardwired components and I don’t want to brick a new tv, so I figured I’d ask.
