Public transit already exists in parts of the world and people still may need to drive there/here.
Reducing dangers is good. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. And I can’t lug around 150kg to butt fuck nowhere.
The ideal situation would be public transport where feasible, no private cars, and you book a self-driving car when you need one to carry 150kg to butt fuck nowhere.
Private motor vehicles are also used in commercial uses. But sure.
Also make rentals more affordable then.
No cars and better public transportation would do the trick as well and no greedy billionaire would be involved.
Public infrastructure is a billion dollar industry. Train Barons have been a thing too.

Self-driving cars are great for the rentiers, and worse for everyone else. As bad as it is to rent your car loan and mortgage and fuel supply, supposedly you can finish paying for those loans. Soon you’ll get to rent oxygen from Elon, it’ll be swell.
To offset the ones it causes, surely?
Be absolutely sure that a self-driving car will not hesitate to kill you if it means saving someone it deems more important.
If there’s an inevitable crash between a typical passenger car with one adult driver and a bus with 35 children, and the crash can either result in the death of the adult driver, or injuries to all 35 kids, I’m pretty sure the car is going to let you take that L. And maybe as a society we would want that, for some anonymous stranger to die so that 35 kids won’t be harmed. It’s an easy trolley problem until the one person is someone you know, love, depend on, or whatever. What if they’re the sole caregiver for a special needs child who will be put into the system and systematically abused, just so a few dozen kids could avoid some scrapes and bruises. Then it gets more complicated, but the self-driving car isn’t going to consider all that.
We shouldn’t care about one vs two or more others, but we do if the one is us.
As a bicyclist, I back da fuck up real far when I see a waymo coming. I’m not gambling my life that their data set gives a shit about bikes.
