Not seeing any reference to “escaping reality” in any of the online dictionaries.
I’m mostly seeing it as withdrawing and sheltering from the outside world. Which I agree with the original that seems synonymous with escaping reality. (In a cultural aspect at least).

Replace “hide in a corner” with almost anything and it works just as well. We all do it, both consciously and unconsciously for most of the time we’re alive.
