You make $65,000 (USD 🤢) in a dead end career doing nothing but showing up sometimes. Guaranteed employment without change in intensity or salary until retirement in 15 years at age 62. You receive 3 weeks paid vacation, reasonably priced medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401k matched at 2.5%, and virtually unlimited sick days as long as you don’t call out too often (>3x month). You are given 6 college credits per semester to use at the local university. You’re currently working on a PhD.

You live comfortably and have 1 year’s salary saved. Zero dependents.

Do you ride it out, or do you seek a career change before it’s too late.

I know, infinite unknown variables, but what would you do regardless?

My 2 cents, these jobs don’t last forever. The type of companies with unlimited PTO or sick plans usually will lay off people in this position eventually, or get acquired, shutter offerings etc. Best to improve yourself while you have the time. Prep for a career change, get an MBA or another cert. Check out WGU and see if you can commit the time. Ride it out sure but once it dries up you’re kind of assed out man. Much harder to find a job in your 50s even in mamagement

Excellent points. I would love to start my own side hustle, perhaps consulting, but I literally don’t know the first thing about any of that. I do however know the ins and outs of a 501©(3). Capstone for my MS was developing a strategic plan for a local non-profit. They loved it so much, they made me a Board member. Did that for three years before realizing it was more of a social club for white retired women. Resigned from the org, and two years later they closed up shop. Turns out, they were banking on gaining a pipe dream celebrity endorsement (Ellen DeGeneres of all inhuman cretins) instead of following the strategic plan.
