Yes, but for any given technology successfully replaced, there were multiple attempts with tech that were unsuccessful. In the 1890s everyone thought shipping would be replaced by airships, and yet despite every aerospace engineer’s best efforts they remain niche at best. What replaced seaships? Planes!
