Walkable cities
Bike lanes within cities and to suburbs
Rent e-bike or scooter, sometimes included in bus/train passes
Free bike service stations with pumps and tools placed around the town
Mix of buses, underground trains, trams with lots of stops and departures
You can bring your bike on the train
Fast intercity trains, main train station centrally located
Use cargo bike for hauling stuff
Cars/vans for everything else
But honestly though it sounds like your situation (rural, often transporting bulky things) calls for a car. But the point is that reducing the number of cars on the road helps the remaining drivers too.
Yeah but you have what you have. I don’t think it’s viable to just destroy suburbia either. Narrowing roads to add proper walking/biking paths, adding some stores/services and public transit would go some of the way.
