I get jealous every ANZAC day when they play the New Zealand national anthem. So good.
And they have their Mauri language right there too.

The lyrics start with something like “Awaken from your graves and kill those barbaric tyrants”.
I don’t have a specific favorite national anthem, but I will take this opportunity to recommend the Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra’s renditions of every national anthem (plus a few regional and historical ones), which was one of the main things that started my interest in national anthems. A few countries have changed their national anthems since it’s release, but it’s mostly up to date.
The Welsh anthem is wonderful - the Welsh are famed as singers anyway, and it’s a joy hearing them belt it out.
One of the best anthems in one of the best scenes followed by one of the best deadpan jokes In one of the best movies.
Unironically, the Soviet Union. I’ve herd that anthem a thousand times as a joke, but you know, it kinda slaps.
Obviously I’m just talking about the arrangement and music because I’ve no idea what the lyrics mean.

The first version of lyrics was written after WWII and changed twice already. First to remove references to Stalin and then again to remove references to Soviet Union. All 3 versions were written by the same guy.

Fuck all the war songs, Slovenia’s anthem is a drinking song called The Toast if I remember correctly.
The full song is 8 verses long and all of them are in the shape of a wine cup, and the seventh verse is our national anthem. The entire song mainly talks about drinking which mostly sums up Slovenia :D
And our anthem sings about peace among all nations not just ours which is rare I would say.

It was very welcome at the CNE following the mass booing during the US anthem lmao
I’m a huge fan of O Canada. Always enjoyed catching hockey games where one of the Canadian teams came down and so I’d get to hear it. Also enjoyed seeing games up in Montreal and getting the Francophonian version.
The French lyrics are different too, not sure how many people outside of Canada even know that, sports fans aside! In Alberta schools since the 80’s they’ve sung the middle part of the song in French even if the kids have no idea what they’re saying 😅, here’s English translation:

Wow that’s disgusting to include in the anthem considering the genocide of indigenous peoples that Canada is founded on and continues to perpetuate.
It’s barely a secret that’s still the case yes. You can tell by the french public resistance to make the french lyrics more secular as well. People have tried. It’s certainly embarrassing.
That is just a piece. The original French is much worse and explicitly racist.

Ukraine’s national anthem is definitely up there. Part of the reason is that it’s writen by an actual songwriter instead of a poet, unlike the anthems of most western nations
Brazil has a very complicated, beautiful and long national anthem. Its great and all but using such difficult words and being so long means most people here don’t know the full song much less understand its meaning.
Funnily enough, I memorized and can sing the italian hymn because of my middle school, but can’t sing the full national anthem from my own country
I am not sure they still do but back in the day at least some Brazilian text books used to have the national anthem on the back, thats how I learned the words.
