I remember seeing an old recipe from the American revolution that made scrambled eggs with a pound of butter. Is the unhealthy thing the canola oil? Or the quantity of it used.

While we don’t have statistics going back to the revolutionary era, it is worth noting people weren’t healthier in the past, heart disease has been one of the top killers for a very long time.

According to the CDC https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/53236 heart disease is in fact one of the leading costs of death for the past 100+ years

In 1900, the earliest year on this chart the leading cause of death were Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Diarrhea and Heart disease in that order. The top three have all been substantially addressed.

According to this https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm4830a1.htm heart disease has DECLINED since the introduction of “industrial oils”

“Age-adjusted death rates for stroke have declined steadily since the beginning of the century. Since 1950, stroke rates have declined 70%, from 88.8 in 1950 to 26.5 in 1996. Total age-adjusted CVD death rates have declined 60% since 1950 and accounted for approximately 73% of the decline in all causes of deaths during the same period”

The premise behind MAHA is flawed, how can Americans become healthy again if they were never particularly healthy to begin with?

Trying to understand your argument here. Canola oil is bad because it has been subjected to an industrial process? Or is it more specifically the use of hexane?

Like your saying that the oil itself isn’t bad for you(ex cold press rapeseed oil), but the industrial process is what makes it bad?

Because animal fats in general seem to be worse for your heart health than plant fats(or they increase your LDL), should we then focus on using red palm oil/olive oil.

sorry if this is a ramble, I think I just don’t understand your argument and would like some clarification.

“Canola” oil is simply rapeseed oil. It cannot be extracted from rapeseed and is unpalatable without said industrial process.

humans have existed for about 2.5M years, Canola oil for about 100 years. A new food to the human organism is going to have health effects, the premise of this post is what are people doing now that will surprise them as unhealthy… industrial processed oils as a primary dietary fat source is a great example… everyone assumes they are healthy and natural.

The seed oil itself is a new food to the human experience, not just how its processed, but its a double whammy packaged together. You can get most people to agree that highly processed foods are bad for health, but most silently carve out an exception for the industrial processed oils.

Because animal fats in general seem to be worse for your heart health than plant fats(or they increase your LDL), should we then focus on using red palm oil/olive oil.

Agreed that plant fats, and industrial processed oils lower LDL - however, is that actually healthy? LDL is not a disease, you would die without it, you need your lipoproteins to function. The vilification of LDL for the damage sugar (highly processed or not) has done is quite the misstep in public health in the last 50 years.

Okay, so what is the mechanism and the damage that seed oils or industrial process do?

The plant sterols are similar to, but don’t function the same as, human cholesterol, so it interferes with human hormonal function (this is why LDL lowers). Industrial leftover chemicals, such as the solvents, are a likely source of contamination at low doses, but we don’t know the effect over time. Quite frankly demanding proof that the new food isn’t safe is backwards, you should be demanding proof that it is safe, and demand to read the human studies (animal studies too) looking at all cause mortality.

I was asking for proof on your positive claim. You’re making the claim that seed oils are bad. I’m expressing doubt. The burden of proof is yours.

There are several studies that proof seed oil is safe, someone linked a pair up in the thread. This person don’t want to listen to anything that says they are wrong and of course they have no proof to back their claims.

There are no studies extant in the literature for any hard health outcomes when it comes to human nutrition. Only epidemiology. I’d personally like to see proof that industrially processed oils are safe for human consumption.

What is something that everybody does right now that is common and normal

You’re making the claim that seed oils are bad. I’m expressing doubt. The burden of proof is yours.

Here is a thought experiment: processed industrial oils were not a dietary input before ww1, would you say people are healthier now? Would you say heart disease is higher or lower now then before ww1?

Yes people are healthier than WW1, have you never heard of the goiter belt? Also people died of heart attacks like pretty commonly(they survive now because of better treatment), They didn’t know what they were or how to treat them. So we don’t have much data about heart conditions until after WW2 once we figured out what a heart attack was. I think right now there’s only some consensus on what causes heart diseases, and diet is definitely a part of that.

Also you keep saying processed industrial oils, but what exactly counts as that? Is only some olive oil processed industrial oil? I’d like a definition.

Club term argument: was life expectancy higher or lower before WW1?

And is the increased use of seed oil the only thing that could contribute to heart attacks and overall health, or were there too many variables to control for?

I’m not saying you are wrong (or right), but that argument does not really work.
