It’s about 5km, and a fairly nice ride despite my city doing very little for cyclists. No theft so far! I see there’s been lots of discussion on theft prevention but I’ll add my opinion: you need to make your bike less of a target by having a big scary looking lock on a bike that doesn’t look great. Just oversize the lock to such a degree that it’s not worth messing with. Also locking up in a higher traffic, more visible area is helpful.

A kryptonite bike lock and a chain to go through your rear tire. No one is going to want to mess with it.

This is a really naive comment. Even the best kryptonite locks can be cut through very quickly and regularly are.

One option: Kryptonite sells an insurance plan. As long as you can show some evidence that the bike was stolen - picture of a broken lock and a police report for instance - they’ll pay for a replacement.

I need to check if I need to renew mine, but it was something like $20 for several years.

Yup, with battery powered grinders there’s really nothing stopping people. Even when it’s broad daylight and there’s a crowd.

You don’t need the best lock. Just a better one than the bikes next to yours. And maybe replace quick releases with proper screws.

I use Pinheads, definitely discourages stripping because you can’t undo them without the uniquely keyed tool.

My local bike shop installs them free if you buy them at the same time as the bike, but they were really easy to add on to mine myself.
