I haven’t really even experienced this sort of betrayal myself but this comic always makes me feel so sad for the oyster.

On the contrary: pearls come into existence because something, like a grain of sand or whatever, gets stuck in the oyster. The foreign object is irritating to the oyster so it coats it with a substance that makes it smoother and less irritating. So if you could remove a pearl without killing an oyster, you’d actually be doing it a favor.

There’s some kind of mental health metaphor in that, I’m sure, but damned if I know what it is.

if you could remove a pearl without killing an oyster

This is actually doable. That is how the pearl farms sometimes work, you do not need to kill the oysters. They do intentionally create the pearls though, by inserting pearl cores in the oysters.

*depending on where the pearl forms and how big it is

Granted, that’s a lot easier to control within an oyster farm environment.

You know that the Pearl is an irritating grain in the oyster, that they can’t get rid of?

The pearl can be removed without killing it. They can pry open the shell just enough to take out the pearl and then insert a new seed which the next pearl grows around

Some farms do kill them bc its faster

Artists often use personal pain as inspiration for their artwork, but rarely appreciate theft of the final art nonetheless.

I used to think so, every time I have seen this comic make the rounds previously.

But this time I think: “source of irritation removed!”
