The best way to attract new users is to have not just a quantity of content but a curated feed of quality content. Part of that means ensuring users’ posts end up in the correct community. If you just allow people to post whatever they want, wherever they want, that’s going to drive users away.

Garmin generally has a pretty good privacy policy, but of course that’s subject to change at any time. But it’s more than I can say for virtually every other company in existence that handles user data.

The point is the Pebbl connects directly to your phone, so no other devices needed. If you need all those other sensors a bike computer can be a good place to send them. There just aren’t any “free” options that I’m aware of.

Are the ANT+ heart rate monitor chest straps not just sorta generic?

ANT+ typically needs to connect to some other dedicated hardware for recording.

Aside from it being open source, is there a reason you mentioned Pebble?

It’s the only open source heart rate monitor that Im aware of. I bought an Amazfit watch before realizing before you can connect it to GadgetBridge you have to register an account with the watch creator so I returned it and never even bothered looking again. Even Pebble openly refuses to distribute their app outside of Google Play. This is why I say there aren’t any great options.

Would a smart watch instead of a bike computer give a good experience for biking?

I mean not for navigation. But what do you need other than that? My friend send me safe routes to ride and I need some way to navigate them so that’s why I have one.

Yeah there aren’t a lot of great options. For hardware there is Pebble + Gadgetbridge or possibly FitTrackee.

For Strava there are alternatives like Wanderer and FitPub. Although Wanderer is more directly comparable to TrailForks and FitPub is still very new and doesn’t have a ton of features.

I’ve got a Hammerhead Karoo 2 and have successfully been able to run apps like OSMAnd on it but it’s not a great experience.

That’s quite literally what this app appears to be trying to do.

Except it’s not, it’s trying to be another social media platform.

The fediverse is already broken up across way too many usecases, such that I have to have a profile for videos, a profile for podcasts, a profile for my blog, a profile for communities, etc. etc. and they want to add another one.

Thats great, you can network and have people skills on social media and link from there to your professional bio. There’s no reason for them to be in the same place.

Reviews, salary discussions, union organization and all such stuff that employees could leverage against employers, for instance.

These are all things that could be designated to one or the other, as appropriate. There’s no reason they need to be in the same place and every reason not to.

I support the idea of a federated employment platform. However I see no reason for an employment platform to have social features.

I’ve complained about this before but I find a lot of Fediverse projects seem intent on straight up cloning mainstream platforms for no logical reason and this seems to be yet another example.

As much as I love Mastodon for what it has achieved, I have to also agree that it’s bad . For many reasons, several of which are fundamental in nature. But I digress.
