  • I honestly can’t think of any, even though I have many examples that objectively seem to not have been worth the effort.

Easiest example is flight school. I went to a tech college for its professional piloting program. Got my private pilot cert and multi engine rating, and completed IFR in the simulator. But when it came time to sign up for IFR in a real plane, I couldn’t get approved for enough student loans to cover the cost, so I dropped out, switched to business school, got a tech job, and dropped out of business school too.

By all accounts, the debt I racked up (like $75k) and the pilot license I haven’t exercised in 14 years are all a huge waste. And my flight instructor was such an impatient ass that I feel mildly scarred from the times he yelled at me.

But, I will never get over the massive feeling of accomplishment I got from earning my private pilot certification. And even more so, earning my multi-engine rating. Even if I failed a part of each of those checkrides and had to retake those portions, I passed them. Even if I never fly again, I am so fucking proud of myself for earning those.

I guess since I never actually graduated from any of the many colleges I’ve dropped out from (three or four depending on how you count), pilot license is my closest analog.

Also have a CDL and skill with docking 53 foot trailers, and tons of forklift experience. Those haven’t been used in a very long time and I may never use them again, but still feel like important parts of me.

  • I can also relate to being forced to eat fat and gristle in meat as a kid. I also cut it out to avoid it but at least a few times I had to really fight with my parents about it. I think they eventually relented a little, but to this day few things repulse me more than even the mere memory of biting into fat or gristle in meat (I’m vegetarian/occasional-pescatarian so I don’t really face that anymore)

  • I have a strong negative feeling about not liking foods, so if there’s something on the menu I don’t like, I usually order it on principle.

That’s awesome. Utilizing spite against oneself for one’s own benefit like that. I (kinda) wish I could conjure the resolve to do that (within vegetarian boundries).

  • I will actually skip a meal, or leave an event to buy my own food, instead of eating food that I don’t like.

When the alternative is actually and literally fighting against revulsion and gag reflex and nausea, or getting my hands and face dirty with food that can’t be eaten cleanly, why would I subject myself to that if I’m not literally starving?

Best example I can think of is a work trip last year for which I marked myself “vegan” instead of “vegetarian” for meal restrictions. One outing had a bunch of pizzas ordered. The only meatless pizza had mushrooms. I hate mushrooms on pizza and the act of picking ingredients off of pizza is so degrading and so disgusting, not to mention they still leave their tastes behind anyways, so I just went out of pocket and got food somewhere else after I left.

Always been like this. Arguably I’ve put a ton of effort into trying new foods and I’ve been lucky to have traveled to a lot of foreign countries - I’ve had live grilled abalone (which I regret every part of), century eggs (tasty as fuck, would eat again), have developed a decent spice tolerance too (not easy growing up in the midwest USA :P). But some stuff still just is forever gross to me.

Also, fuck sandwiches and burgers that fall apart in your hands or have things fall or slide out or liquids or sauces drip stuff while you bite down. I am so repulsed and irritated by this that I feel actual rage.

  • I second this! I’ve saved so much money on shaving since buying a double edged safety razor like that back in, like, 2012?

i’ve had to buy only two packs of 100 razors in the twelve years since and I’m still on that second pack.

that same 100 pack (Derby Extra) currently goes for $9 on amazon

I also have a straight razor that I enjoyed using a long time ago, but all the effort in keeping it sharp was just soo much hassle. Never touched it again after getting my safety razor, though I do very occasionally miss using the straight razor, it was just such a cool vibe using it!
