Driving between them takes 5 minutes in a straight line. Safely walking between them, however, is a six-hour diversion through four unrelated towns, as opposed to the 30 or so minutes it would take in a straight line. Thanks to hostile architecture, I guess.

The real issue is that you’re using Google Maps and Google Maps is notoriously bad when creating pedestrian or bike routes. For those cases you should use a router that’s based on OpenStreetMap since OSM’s database it’s way better when dealing with foot and bike infrastructure. The same route using an OSM based router gives a perfectly fine walkable route.
