  • Orca are not uncommon in the waters near me. I was in a relatively large boat so I felt quite secure, but if I were swimming or in a kayak it would have been terrifying even knowing that they don’t attack humans. They are huge and hunt in packs and are intensely curious so sometimes approach to investigate things.

Harbor seals are all over and sun themselves on the docks where my uncle lives. Cute but big and smelly. My poor uncle has to clean up after them. It’s always cool to see them but definitely not scary.

I was raised around wildlife and instilled with a deep respect for nature, that these creatures are best left to live their lives and enjoyed at a distance.

  • I can only speak for myself.

For me, it’s about harm reduction so not being perfect is OK with me as long as I’m trying. Now personally, that means if my cousin gives me eggs from her spoiled hens, that’s probably OK, but I don’t eat egg dishes when i go out (but paradoxically, I will eat a bun that has egg in it if there is not an alternative).

I eat cheese occasionally, but not if it has animal rennet in it. I rarely drink, but avoid clarified wines since they use isenglass in the processing.
I don’t eat gelatin or meat stocks or bullion. I also avoid leather in my clothing and prefer plant-based clothes over wools.

I limit my dairy, not just for moral and environmental reasons but also since my tolerance for it has diminished with age. Before I went veggie I would drink a gallon of whole milk every week. When I stopped I felt so much better, my acne cleared up, my hair got less oily and my intestines were way happier with me.

I also take B12 supplements because I will often go long periods without having any animal products in my food.

  • I guess I don’t want to shit on this advice too much, for non-pathological anxiety it can be helpful. Reframing situations to be less intense is a useful tool in your mental toolbox to alleviate stress.

However, pathological anxiety isn’t really related to the importance ascribed to a situation. Here’s some things that cause my anxiety to be an issue:

    1. Self-flagellation - Let’s spend the afternoon, evening and all night reliving every mistake I’ve made since childhood.
    2. Ego dystonic intrusive thoughts - “If you cut your throat with a sharp enough knife it won’t even hurt.” Thanks brain, very helpful.
    3. Nothing at all - “Hey who wants to have a panic attack for absolutely no reason? You do!”

I don’t think “Do it for fun” is amazing advice for these situations. I’ll stick to my meds and my doctor’s advice.
