A car is the most power-dense item that a normal person is likely to own. An ev battery that will drag a car a hundred miles will run a house for days.

Nonsense. The Aztecs thought human life was so important they offered it to the gods in exchange for bountiful harvests. We offer it up in exchange for checks notes being able to work farther away from home.
They were, by most accounts, more akin to martyrdom. The participants in the ritual warfare all signed up, essentially, to die. The idea was not to kill your enemy, but take them prisoner for the sacrifice. It was sort of an honor, in a way.
Before the Aztecs it was mostly high ranking prisoners of war that were sacrificed in mesoamerica. (Think how warlords and rebelling generals are often executed when they lose.)
Yea, the Aztecs were so horrified at the Spanish massacre of Toxcatl that they massively revolted (commoners included), leading to the “Noche Triste” for the Spanish.
I wish we didn’t have to work so far from home.
We have to work far from home, though, in order to make space for all that infrastructure that lets us work far from home.

My sister volunteered as an ambulance assistant in hs. She got a call one night of a car crash, she went. A friend of hers was driving way too fast, lost control, went off road and ran into a tree.
Worse he was not wearing a seat belt and got sent out the windshield and head first into a tree. Her description was “I had to pick up his body with a shovel and put it in a bucket”.
There was also a bus crash a few years later on a local highway. It was kids going on a field trip. According to the 911 call, the operator asked “how many ambulances are needed?” and the caller who witnessed it just said “all of them”
I worked as an ER orderly for a while. Evening shift on weekends. It was a town with a fair amount of gang violence, so I’d see my old high-school fellow students and my neighbors coming in with stab and gunshot wounds. If they were conscious, we’d chat: “How’s your sister, Phuta?” “Good, Manny. Is your brother out of Chino yet?” “Nah, he got extra time for a fight.” “Sounds like him.”
But it was the car accidents and industrial accidents that were the most gruesome.
How can you be so distracted not to notice a cow?
Depends on the speed you are driving.
Texas has cows. Not as many as pop culture might suggest, but a lot.
Texas also has lots and lots of country roads with 60miles per hour speed limits. That’s nearly 100 kph in euros.
If it’s night and a cow is on the road you might not have time to react. The cow certainly doesn’t have time.
Most people have really bad night vision. They still drive like they are in daylight even on moonless nights. Even a small car has big stopping distances when travelling at speed. No one has it drilled into them enough, at a certain speed, your stopping distance is longer than the range of your headlights, and it’s not as fast as most people seem to believe.
Over-driving your headlights at 5AM. Years ago, my roommate’s brother died by crashing his car into the side of a train that way.
