I would not recommend doing abstract art. It can be extremely satisfying to create new and interesting things seemingly out of nothing, but most people want to see depictions from the recognizable world. Because of this, it’s tough to sell and if no one wants to buy what you make, the stuff just accumulates and after a while, your unsold artworks can feel like a weight that you’re carrying.

Lots of foods I like are polarizing.

Having/raising kids. Best thing I ever did in my life. The most satisfying work and they are fantastic grown people. Absolutely loved having a large family. But never have I ever recommended to anyone else that they ought to have them.

And for sure living in Florida. I love the hot weather and the rain in summer, the enormous variety of birds we have, the beautiful land that doesn’t scream it’s beauty like mountains do, it whispers, the closer you look the more beauty you find. And since I’m old enough to remember before it was so politically awful, know that really about half of us are not actually conservative and it’s still nice in the cities. But also know that not everyone is calibrated to enjoy hot weather.

    Driving the Tanami Track.

It is one of the more remote roads in the world. Beautiful in its own way.

Can be 400-500km from emergency services. And 250km from shops. Hot and dusty.

    –

Last year, driving north we saw a couple who had rolled their car, 100km from the nearest town. Very minor injuries, but one with an epilepsy diagnosis.

We were the first vehicle they had seen, in the 2 hours since the time of accident.

Transferred them and belongings to the nearest hospital 350km away.

    vigilantism.

it’s one of the most rewarding things you can do for yourself and your community but simultaneously the dumbest most dangerous thing you can do to yourself.

you will be hit, shot at, stabbed, maced, tazed, and chased. all in the name of personal justice that a government refuses to comply with.

your targets will be released. they will not serve time. they will commit crimes again, and I will be there.

    don’t do it.

3d printing. It’s essentially process engineering or manufacturing engineering but hobby level. It will go wrong and you will be frustrated and it will take experimentation and thought to figure it out. (it’s better now than years ago, things have drastically improved.) if you don’t like fiddling with things, don’t do 3d printing. For me? I freaking love it. I love fixing printing mistakes or whatever. Solving problems is wonderful.

I’m in a committed lifelong relationship that I intend to be faithful in, and I don’t think she wants to do such activities. I’m trying my best to make it happen as much as possible between just the two of us lol. It’s not easy with school and work and two kids.

    Guns.

I like sport shooting at ranges and the historical context. For instance, I have a non-sporterised Lee-Enfield that was used to shoot Nazis.

However, firearms should only be owned by folks that have the training and level of responsibility to use them safely.

    Sports cars.

You can get them at reasonable price. But damn, they’re expensive to maintain, and you pay more taxes and insurance on them.

If you can fit in a Miata (and fit your ego into one), that’s all anyone needs from a sports car really. They’re fun on the road and the racetracks are lousy with them. Cheap to buy and maintain. Drive a Miata. Buy a homely one if you have to. Just drive it.

Deadlock. I feel like you need experience in maybe 3 genres of games before you can understand the concept well, and then it’s a sizable time commitment. I adore it, but that’s a pretty steep entry fee.

I think that’s the best part about the game. They didn’t make a game for everyone. They made this ultra specific game that looks amazing, it is funny, it has hundreds of thousand voicelines. The movment is the best i have ever seen in a game. It’s complicated as fuck, the later you start playing, the more characters you have to learn. But still, they cracked over 200k players last week after the update, and it is still invite only. I really enjoy my time right now, because i feel like we’re in the good old times right now, before it goes public and the lootboxes roll out.

Completely agree, I’m not too fond of what happened to tf2 and I’m concerned this might go the same route, but fingers crossed we have a lot of good times to come

The Fediverse. I can’t be bothered explaining what the Fediverse is or how it works or how it differs from traditional social media. I can’t be bothered recommending browser add-ons that correct issues that might not actually be ‘issues’ to the person in question. And even if I did all that, there’s a 1/100 chance they’ll actually care enough to try it, and an even smaller chance still that they’ll stick with it. I don’t even tell people that the memes I send them are from Lemmy, because I can’t be bothered with the follow-up questions. My parents, for example, who use Facebook exclusively, could not be paid enough to even try the Fedi equivalent (Friendica). The average person doesn’t care about their private data being sold or the behaviour of tech CEOs or the abuse of their psyches by algorithms, so there’s no reason for them to go to the pain of learning an entirely new ecosystem that’s less ‘good’ but requires more effort. The average person simply wants AI-generated images of lions with racist anti-immigrant slogans printed under them, and Facebook is unbeatable in that regard. I just can’t be bothered. Plus, I like that it’s comparatively less crowded here. Let Facebook keep their race rioters!

Yeah I can’t be bothered to do that either. I post links from Lemmy, people ask “whats this?” I say “its Lemmy, like a reddit thing but different” if they are interested after that, I just tell them to go in and click things, maybe make a account and see if it keeps their interest. I’d say 1 out of every 30 people are interested enough to make a account but not sure how many of them stay active. Maybe 1 in 100 lol.
