Another senior software dev here with nearly 20 years experience. I have never needed or used these tools. Cuz fuckem, that’s why.
Most developers reported AI made their productivity worse.
Out of the few that said AI made their productivity better, most of them couldn’t code.
This is partly what’s been said in this thread (from my skimming of the top 10 comments) but also because a lot of people are so fucking dumb that AI has been like Neo in the Matrix for them. They are so dumb that using basic words to search and filtering through the results seems like black magic. Now they feel empowered and smart. It’s extremely fucking scary.
I only read the top 10 comments because I have taken my sleep medication and it’s starting to win the fight ATM. Just needed to get this out before it was too late.

He can’t go through his day without AI because he’s made himself dependent on it instead of doing anything for himself, and he genuinely thinks that everyone else is the same way.
People have surrendered their critical thinking skills. Truth is, AI disappearing overnight really would be disastrous, because a huge portion of humanity is utterly addicted to it and incompetent without it.
I don’t usually support “cull the weak” kinda mentalities… but cull the weak! Take away their AI and let the unemployed people who refuse to use AI take their jobs. I wanna see all these AI supporters go to the bottom of the barrel where they belong.

The AI bubble might pop, but just as the dotcom bubble didn’t mean the end of the internet it won’t mean the end of AI. LLMs (or whatever might supersede them) are here to stay.
I agree, but it will mean an end to highly subsidized LLM subscriptions and free access to any cloud LLM worth actually using for anything, which will make it much harder for the average person to rely on LLMs as much as this person.
Just chatting with an LLM uses so few tokens I don’t really see that changing
I think most people were totally incompetent before AI. It’s just that now they have a tool that creates bullshit for them and an excuse when problems arise.
Some of the requests that come into my office now it’s like, I know the person barely even knows what they’re asking for, but they put it in the shape of a valid request so now I’ve got to expend energy to educate them on how what they’re asking for doesn’t make sense.
If they’d just come to me with honest questions and a rough outline of what they wanted, I could’ve helped them, but because they insist on filtering everything through an LLM I’ve got to try to communicate through this thick, meaning-eroding medium. It’s like trying to talk to someone through a mattress. Whatever happened to having the courage of your convictions. sigh
People have assumptions of what correct communication should be, and it generally has a minimum page length instead of minimum content amount.
The worst cases I’ve seen is when they’re trying to convince someone of something verbally, they get the agreement very quickly, but get stuck in convince mode rather than moving on since it shouldn’t be that easy.

Let’s explore something much more dependent now and see if it holds up. What if smartphones disappeared? We still have cellular phones, the Nokia makes a comeback, but the use of smartphones, iPads, tablets, that whole concept is gone. I guess nobody did any work a few years back when AI wasn’t being shoved down our throats. Also imagine being a carpenter or an electrician and being asked if you can get through your entire workday without AI. That guy is such an idiot is makes my head hurt.

Your second point was where my mind immediately went. I have never used AI at work and have no way to use AI at work even if I wanted to, because I don’t use a computer for work. Even if I was a massive AI supporter, I’d still see exactly zero difference at work.
Seriously. What were these people doing like two years ago and what are they doing now that is different? Everyone in my office that uses a lo of AI is just doing it because they are lazy and don’t care that their work product is shit because it was shit anyway.
Get through a work day without it? Yes. BECAUSE THEN I’D ACTUALLY HAVE A FUCKING JOB.
